Making buses a solution to the climate change challenge

CHALLENGE

Greener Journeys’ overriding objective is to demonstrate through credible research the economic, environmental and social benefits of the bus – in order to encourage more people to leave their cars at home and take the bus. This campaign focused on ensuring that buses were at the heart of Government plans to tackle dangerously high levels of pollution in the UK.

APPROACH

MHP worked with a former Government transport advisor to produce two hard-hitting reports highlighting the severity of the air quality issue in the UK, and the integral role that greener buses could play in affording a solution to this growing problem. Other highlights include Catch the Bus Week, an annual nationwide event aimed at celebrating the bus. Last year’s event was backed by 18 MPs, including Buses Minister Andrew Jones, and generated over 90 pieces of coverage.

IMPACT

Our public affairs and PR campaigns have received widespread attention from policy makers and the media. They include a report on congestion which generated 270 pieces of coverage and helped to trigger a parliamentary select committee inquiry into the problem. We have also helped to secure a number of policy wins; highlights include achieving cross-party support for a non-means tested bus pass ahead of the General Election in 2015. We also helped persuade the Government to introduce a £580 million access fund for sustainable travel initiatives, including bus infrastructure and successfully campaigned for the protection of the Bus Services Operators Grant amid a challenging spending review.
