Establishing a dominant thought leadership programme

CHALLENGE

MHP has advised MSCI, a leading provider of investment decision support tools worldwide, including indexes, portfolio risk and performance analytics and environmental, social and governance (ESG) research, for over 13 years. The challenge has been to develop what is often regarded as dry and technical subject matter into compelling areas of interest for key commentators and a wide range of publications.

APPROACH

Across MSCI’s business lines, MHP’s approach is to position the company’s research as offering insights into developments in companies and institutional investors that are of significance for investment commentators. A recent example is our work on a paper from MSCI’s ESG Research team which looked at the funding status of more than 9,000 corporate pension schemes globally, relative to revenues. Overarching campaign-specific work is MSCI’s broader corporate narrative, which connects the Index, ESG Research and Analytics business lines, and ensuring these different lines of conversation complement one another to tell the wider business story.

IMPACT

Our general approach has been to build MSCI profile in, and as regular contributor to, a wider range of media using perennial and hot topics such as index reviews, factor investing and ESG. This has generated an exponential increase in media coverage and profile across the board. For instance, the recent Pensions Underfunding research paper has received over 35 pieces of Tier 1 coverage including the Financial Times, FTfm, Financial News and Wall Street Journal amongst others.
