Top agency seeks bright grads

Katie Spence

Our 2018 Graduate Scheme is open for applications and we are looking forward to reading your submissions. Our programme immerses bright young people in the world of business and communications from their first day with us.

Graduates become core members of our client teams and quickly acquire detailed understanding of client and project management, business and financial systems, marketing and communications. Skills which are combined with a thorough comprehension of politics and the media.

As well as intense training, you will have the opportunity to spend time across all our practices; Capital Markets / Financial PR, Health, Corporate and Public Affairs and Brand. All the graduates have the added bonus of completing an external secondment. This year we are continuing to use our Blind CV process, which is an effective way of promoting diversity and ensuring we recruit on the basis of merit alone.

So, how will you make yourself stand out from the crowd? I have recruited for many graduate schemes and see the same mistakes year after year in applications. Below are some basic guidelines that I feel are important when applying for a graduate scheme this year.

Make your application a targeted one; we want to see evidence that you want to work for MHP. Generic or cut and paste applications are easy to spot and very off-putting. Making yourself stand out isn’t always an easy task, but make sure you are interesting, to the point and free from clichés. A few things you could include are: How your background makes you an asset to the role and to the company, What skills do you bring to the position? What specifically interests you about this position? This is your introduction, a way of demonstrating your understanding of the role, give examples, make it personal and make it relevant to MHP.

Research is really important, check out our website, look at recent work and our Twitter feed. There will be lots of information that you could use to help make your application stand out. By doing your research you will get a sense of an organisation’s personality and values which should give you some insight for your application and covering letter.

Add some personality: We want to know about you, so show us how you will go the extra mile. This could be work placements, spare time projects, student unions or societies. Open up, apart from the interview this is your time to shine.

What else do you need to know? Graduates schemes are not just open for recent graduates; if you graduated two to three years ago, feel free to apply.

And finally, with everything else to think about don’t forget the basics. Make sure you address the right company and contact. You will be surprised how many times I’ve received applications addressed to MPH or a completely different agency. Always check and double check spelling and grammar.  My last piece of advice is; make sure you show your desire to learn!
