According to the news last week, disgraced golfer Tiger Woods is pledging to donate £1.8 million to send doctors and medical supplies to Haiti. The news has created an interesting debate online with a huge buzz on social media sites such as Twitter and a number of bloggers questioning whether this is a genuine attempt to help the victims of the disaster or just another example of an overzealous management team trying to manage Tiger’s questionable reputation.
On the one hand, some say that this is a blatant PR attempt at damage limitation as the media continues to write about alleged extramarital affairs. On the other hand is his goodwill gesture the victim unfair media cynicism. The question is, when your reputation has hit rock bottom what on earth do you do?!
Whatever your view point, some will argue that “Tiger Woods is doing something amazing” and if this act of generosity encourages other celebrities to donate some their hard-earned cash then perhaps Tiger deserves some positive press.
Interestingly his management team are said to be ‘excited’ about the idea of a donation. There is a time and place for well publicised philanthropy. However sometimes humility serves you better.
