All-white on the night

Written by Deborah Hitchcock on 1 April 2010

So it’s the week before Easter, the first week of British Summer Time, a PR’s dream … just think of all the spring campaigns that have been worked on throughout the winter months to launch at a time just like this.

And then you turn on the television and there is three foot of snow in Scotland (did I mention it’s the first week of British Summer Time?). I wonder how many PR professionals recoiled in horror when they saw that?

There are lots of things that can scupper a launch – from government announcements to football matches and celebrity weddings – which is why we plan ahead, doing our best to predict the news agenda and give our campaign the best shot of achieving their potential.

But there are some things you can’t plan for – the death of public figure, celebrity embroiled in drugs shocker, Cheryl ditching Ashley (ok maybe we should have seen that one coming) – that will dominate the news for days taking up valuable campaign space. And now it seems that the weather is one of them

Bit of luck then that we’d already looked at the weather forecast, taken a call and pushed our spring campaign back a few weeks.
